Frequently Asked Questions
Is POA difficult for students with no prior accounting knowledge?
POA is designed as a beginner subject at Secondary 3 — no prior knowledge is assumed. However, it requires logical thinking, attention to detail, and consistent practice. Students who are systematic and enjoy working with numbers often find POA very manageable. Our progressive teaching approach ensures all students build confidence from the basics.
What careers does POA lead to?
POA provides a foundation for careers in accounting, finance, banking, auditing, and business management. It is also a valuable life skill — understanding financial statements is useful for personal finance, entrepreneurship, and management roles in any industry. Many students continue with H2 Accounting at JC or accounting diplomas at polytechnic.
Exam Tips
- 1Always write out the format first for Income Statements and Balance Sheets — having the structure in place reduces errors
- 2For double-entry questions, check that total debits = total credits after every transaction
- 3When calculating depreciation, note whether the question asks for the charge for the year or accumulated depreciation
- 4In ratio analysis, always give the formula, the calculation, AND a one-sentence interpretation
- 5For inventory valuation, show all workings clearly — partial marks are awarded even if the final value is incorrect
