What are the PSLE Mathematics heuristics?

The 12 core heuristics are: Act it Out, Draw a Diagram/Model, Make a Systematic List, Look for Patterns, Guess and Check, Working Backwards, Supposition (Assumption), Before-After Comparison, Restate the Problem, Simplify the Problem, Solve Part of the Problem, and Use Equations. When should my child start PSLE Maths preparation?

We recommend building strong foundations from P4 onwards. P5 is the critical year where most PSLE topics are introduced. By P6, students should be familiar with all topics and focusing on revision, exam technique, and time management.

Exam Tips

1Read each word problem twice — underline key values, relationships, and the question asked
2Draw a model or diagram even if you think you can solve it mentally — it reduces careless mistakes
3For a challenging problem, try working backwards from the answer choices or using the supposition method
4Allocate time: Paper 1 — 1 minute per mark; Paper 2 — 1.5 minutes per mark. Skip and return to difficult questions
5Always check units — ensure your answer is in the correct unit (cm vs m, g vs kg)
