Teaching Methodology
Chemistry is taught at three levels: Macro (observable reactions in the lab), Micro (particulate explanations using atoms and molecules), and Symbolic (chemical equations and formulas). Students learn to connect all three levels for deep understanding.
The mole concept is the foundation of quantitative chemistry. We teach a systematic approach to all calculation types — mole calculations, concentration, gas volumes, and percentage yield/purity — with progressive difficulty.
Extensive hands-on practice in titration, salt preparation, rate experiments, and QA testing. Students learn to identify unknown ions using the QA table, record observations precisely, and draw correct conclusions.

Why is the mole concept so important in Chemistry?
The mole concept is the bridge between the microscopic world (atoms and molecules) and the macroscopic world (grams and litres we can measure). Almost all quantitative chemistry — concentration, gas volumes, percentage calculations — uses the mole as the central unit. Mastering it early makes the rest of O-Level Chemistry much easier.
How do you teach organic chemistry effectively?
We use a 'functional group' approach rather than memorising individual reactions. Once students understand how a particular functional group behaves, they can predict reactions for any molecule containing that group. We also use reaction maps to visualise the conversion pathways between different organic compounds.
Exam Tips
- 1Always write balanced chemical equations — marks are deducted for incorrect or missing state symbols in Pure Chemistry
- 2For stoichiometry calculations, show all working steps: (1) Write balanced equation, (2) Convert given info to moles, (3) Use mole ratio, (4) Convert to required unit
- 3In QA, record observations in sequence: colour change, precipitate formation, effervescence, and test any gas evolved
- 4For 'describe the bonding' questions, always state the type of bonding, the particles involved, and the forces between them
