Teaching Methodology

Advanced Composition (作文)

Students learn to write argumentative (议论文) and expository (说明文) essays at the A-Level standard. Emphasis on thesis development, logical flow, incorporating evidence, and using sophisticated vocabulary and rhetorical techniques.

Critical Reading (阅读理解)

Training in analysing diverse text types — news commentary, editorials, literary prose, and academic excerpts. Students learn to identify the author's stance, evaluate arguments, and craft precise answers.

Oral Communication (口试)

Intensive practice for the oral examination: structured presentation (口头报告) based on stimulus materials, followed by discussion (口头互动) with examiners. Focus on current affairs topics relevant to Singapore and the Chinese-speaking world.

Is JC Chinese compulsory?

H1 Chinese Language is not compulsory for all JC students, but it is an important subject for students who wish to maintain Chinese language proficiency beyond secondary school. It is also valued for university applications, scholarships, and careers requiring bilingual competence. Many students take it in JC1 to complete the requirement early.

How is JC Chinese different from Secondary Higher Chinese?

JC Chinese demands greater sophistication — essays require deeper analysis and evidence, comprehension passages are more complex, and oral components require spontaneous discussion on abstract issues. Our programme bridges the gap by introducing JC-level expectations gradually while building on students' O-Level foundation.

Exam Tips

1For composition, use the 3-part structure: 引言 (introduction with thesis), 正文 (2–3 body paragraphs with examples), 结论 (conclusion with reflection)
2In comprehension, identify the question type — literal, inferential, or evaluative — and adjust your answering style accordingly
3For oral presentation, structure your response with a clear opening statement, 2–3 main points with elaboration, and a concluding remark
4Memorise versatile 成语 and 俗语 applicable across multiple topics — e.g., 居安思危 (be prepared for danger in times of peace) for essays on environment, economy, or personal development
