How is the PSLE English paper structured?
PSLE English consists of four papers: Paper 1 (Writing — 55 marks, 1 hour 10 min), Paper 2 (Language Use & Comprehension — 95 marks, 1 hour 50 min), Paper 3 (Listening Comprehension — 20 marks, ~35 min), and Paper 4 (Oral Communication — 30 marks, ~10 min). Our programme covers all four components with dedicated practice for each.
My child struggles with composition writing. How can NYEC help?
Our Writing Workshop approach teaches students a step-by-step writing framework: story planning, introduction hooks, paragraph development, and effective conclusions. We provide weekly writing practice with detailed feedback, focusing on one skill at a time. Students also build a personal 'phrase bank' of good expressions to use in their compositions.
Do you cover oral examination preparation?
Yes, every lesson includes 10–15 minutes of oral practice. Students practise reading aloud with proper pronunciation and intonation, and work through stimulus-based conversation scenarios. We provide model responses and conduct mock oral exams before PSLE.
What is the class size for Primary English?
Our Primary English classes have a maximum of 10–12 students. This ensures every student gets individual attention, participates actively in discussions, and receives personalised feedback on their writing.
Exam Tips
- 1Plan your composition for 5–7 minutes before writing — a good outline prevents going off-topic
- 2For comprehension, read the questions first before the passage to know what to look for
- 3In oral stimulus-based conversation, use the TREES structure: Topic sentence, Reason, Example, Elaboration, Summary
- 4Check for common grammar mistakes: subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and spelling of frequently tested words
- 5For listening comprehension, read the questions during the pre-listening time and predict possible answers
