Frequently Asked Questions

Should my child take Additional Mathematics?

A-Maths is recommended for students scoring B3 or above in Secondary 2 Mathematics and who plan to pursue H2 Mathematics at JC or courses in engineering, science, or computing. It is more abstract and demanding than E-Maths but very rewarding for capable students. We offer a bridging programme for students who need support transitioning to A-Maths.

How does E-Maths differ from A-Maths?

E-Maths (4052) focuses on practical mathematical skills needed for daily life and many careers. It covers algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability at a foundational-to-intermediate level. A-Maths (4049) is more abstract and rigorous, introducing calculus, advanced algebra, and proofs. Most JC science courses require A-Maths.

How much practice should my child do for Maths at secondary level?

For best results, students should complete 3–5 hours of Maths practice per week outside of class, increasing to 6–8 hours in the months before O-Levels. The focus should be on timed practice papers and targeted revision of weak topics, not mindless repetition.

Exam Tips

  • 1For E-Maths Paper 1 (no calculator), practise mental arithmetic and estimation regularly — these skills atrophy without practice
  • 2In 'show that' questions (A-Maths), work backwards from the given result to identify the approach, then write the solution forward
  • 3Always check your answer: substitute back into the original equation or verify with an alternative method
  • 4For calculus questions, show all differentiation/integration steps clearly — method marks are awarded even if the final answer is wrong
  • 5Memorise key formulas before the exam: trigonometric identities, differentiation rules, and integration formulas
