Teaching Methodology

What is the difference between Combined Biology and Pure Biology?
Pure Biology (6093) covers all topics in greater depth and includes a Practical Assessment (Paper 3, 20%). Combined Science (Biology) covers fewer topics with less depth and has no separate practical paper (practical is assessed within the theory papers). Pure Biology is recommended for students considering H2 Biology at JC or biomedical careers.
How do I help my child remember so many biological terms?
We use mnemonics, visual flashcards, and regular retrieval practice. Rather than rote memorisation, we focus on understanding relationships — for example, understanding WHY a red blood cell has no nucleus (to maximise haemoglobin capacity) is easier to remember than just memorising the fact.
Exam Tips
- 1For data-based questions, always quote specific values from the table or graph — 'the rate increased by 15%' is better than 'the rate increased'
- 2In biological drawing, use a sharp pencil, draw clear continuous lines, label with straight ruled lines, and include a title and magnification
- 3When comparing two biological structures, use a table format: state the feature, then describe how it differs in each structure
- 4For 'explain' questions, use the structure 'Because... therefore...' to show clear cause-and-effect reasoning
