BootcampP4 – P63–5 days (holiday intensive)

Heuristics Mathematics

Master every PSLE heuristics technique and become a confident problem-solver

About This Programme

An intensive mathematics bootcamp focused on mastering all 12 PSLE heuristics. Through deep dives into each heuristics technique, problem-solving challenges, and timed practice, students develop the skills to tackle even the most challenging word problems with confidence.

Duration
3–5 days (holiday intensive)
Intensity
High intensity — 6 hours per day
Format
Heuristic-by-heuristic deep dives, problem-solving competitions, and timed practice

Syllabus Alignment

  • All 12 PSLE Mathematics heuristics
  • MOE PSLE Mathematics format (Papers 1 & 2)
  • Focus on problem-solving and higher-order thinking

Learning Outcomes

  • Master all 12 PSLE heuristics with confidence and precision
  • Identify the most efficient heuristic for each problem type
  • Solve complex multi-step word problems systematically
  • Develop speed and mental agility for PSLE problem-solving

Teaching Methodology

Heuristic Deep Dives

Each session focuses on 2–3 heuristics with intensive practice. Students learn not just how to use each technique, but when to apply it — the critical decision-making skill that separates good students from excellent ones.

Problem-Solving Competitions

Daily team and individual problem-solving challenges create an exciting, competitive atmosphere that motivates students to push their limits. Collaborative discussion helps students learn alternative solution methods from peers.

Speed & Accuracy Drills

Timed practice sessions build the speed needed for PSLE Paper 1 while maintaining accuracy. Students track their progress daily and see tangible improvement over the bootcamp.

Key Topics Covered

Model Drawing
Part-whole, comparison, and before-after models for complex problem scenarios
Supposition Method
The 'assume all' technique for challenging quantity and value problems
Working Backwards
Reverse calculation for problems where the final state is known
Pattern Recognition
Identifying number patterns, figure patterns, and using algebraic generalisation
Before-After & Units Method
Ratio-based problems involving transfers, changes, and equalising

Frequently Asked Questions

My child knows the heuristics but can't identify which one to use. Can this bootcamp help?

Absolutely — this is exactly what our bootcamp specialises in. The key skill is heuristic selection: understanding the problem type and matching it to the most efficient technique. We teach a decision framework: problem features → heuristic match. Through intensive practice with 50+ word problems over the bootcamp, students develop an intuitive sense of which heuristic to apply.

Is this suitable for students who are already strong in Maths?

Yes! While the bootcamp helps struggling students close gaps, strong students benefit enormously from exposure to more advanced problem types and alternative solution methods. Our competition elements and challenge problems stretch even the most capable students. Many high achievers use this bootcamp to push from AL3/AL4 to AL1/AL2.

Exam Tips

  • 1Read the problem and ask: 'What type is this?' before choosing a heuristic — quantity-value → supposition, before-after → model drawing
  • 2Always check: does your answer make sense? Plug it back into the problem to verify
  • 3For 4–5 mark problems, show all working clearly — method marks are substantial in PSLE Paper 2
